News: Little guys don’t like new Calif. beer law

Accoding to the Associated Press Micro-brewers are upset that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed a bill they say puts them at a competitive disadvantage.

The bill allows breweries to give away promotional advertising items valued up to $3. That’s up from the current 25-cent value limit.

The bill’s author, Democratic Assemblyman Alberto Torrico of Fremont, says the measure helps level the playing field between beer companies and distilled-spirits manufacturers. Hard-liquor dealers can give away items valued up to $5.

The California Small Brewers Association says the state’s 280 micro-brewers won’t be able to afford goodies similar to those likely to be given away by giants such as Anheuser-Busch.
